During our planning period, we met as a group and were given two lesson plans for classrooms to visit. Each group consisted of about 3 teachers and at least one administrator. Eight teachers volunteered to open their classrooms for observations, including me!<br />
My purpose statement was to "use the floor activity to develop understanding of how to use Pythagorean Theorem to find distances on a coordinate plane". After my students completed and turned in their bellwork, they joined me at the back of my room where I had taped the axes on the floor.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used pre-planned coordinates for my students to graph. Two points created a vertical line, two created a horizontal line and two created a diagonal line. In the discussion, my students decided they could count spaces for a vertical or horizontal line, but not a diagonal. Then, I mentioned the Pythagorean Theorem and had them discuss in their groups what they remembered about it. After their discussions, we created a right triangle and they solved for the diagonal line. We did a couple other examples.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After that, they went back to their tables and used them to graph their given points and find the distance on paper between the two points. I taped their two-students tables down the middle before school, so I used that for the x-axis. The y-axis was the crack where the two tables met. The day before, I discretely made tick marks with permanent marker and labeled the axes.</div>

I taught 6 classes, with at least 6 groups each and DID NOT TAKE A SINGLE PICTURE!!!!!! UGH!!!! So today, in anticipation for this blog post, I chose a couple examples and staged pics. I was just so wrapped up in the excitement of my students learning and my fellow teachers observing that I didn't even remember I had my phone in my pocket!</div>

We had 6 pre-planning days and I felt very relaxed in getting stuff done. I made myself available to help some of our new teachers get their rooms ready or answer any questions they had.<br />
<br />
We had our Open House the Thursday before students arrived, so I got to meet about 90 of my 158 students! Our school decided to have a mock school day for parents and students with 7-minute classes. From a teacher stand point, this was a phenomenal idea. Every year I find myself repeating the SAME THING OVER AND OVER as each small group came through my door. I got to where I was giving them a shortened version of the speech. This year, there was a lack of communication to parents about the schedule, so I still had some walking in at all times, even my mock planning period! LOL! After the usual speech, I asked the parents to write one positive word about their child on a post-it note and stick it on my ONE WORD bulletin board. Like my students, they were a little shy doing their first classroom activity! Here's a pic...<br />

I had an amazing 3 days with students this week. Here is the assignment I wrote out prior to Open House (READ: things change!). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOBYVDvz9iycTVtYMmwQCzrDBXe508aR1EQDIWoGFhXR0he6ifqSROPfoi7n_sIgEa9vVt6uR3j_lWQZiWnXVAgcoRaaSmkCTQ1kpIHMBMtl6_oY3xuTmCh8DIDgOpJdZK2iel18X6UbU/s1600/IMG_6038.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOBYVDvz9iycTVtYMmwQCzrDBXe508aR1EQDIWoGFhXR0he6ifqSROPfoi7n_sIgEa9vVt6uR3j_lWQZiWnXVAgcoRaaSmkCTQ1kpIHMBMtl6_oY3xuTmCh8DIDgOpJdZK2iel18X6UbU/s640/IMG_6038.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For Bellwork, they had two tasks to complete: post-it note activity and name tent. Wednesday's post-it note activity was to write ONE GOOD THING that happened to them today. They found it easy and I wanted to start on a positive note! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-PBZj0pde3jW-qzKJlrpjjuqUP8GuxyB_rnoBDUyqc5j6Rt0n4_Gz2h0U0w4mbEtzz4duFIlAW3UdgzMMQZi4rO4hfig5oK7c3yUGG6iGghX2PQqPM1s7Nfdm9zg8CwtVGboq3MxgsEw/s1600/IMG_6090.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-PBZj0pde3jW-qzKJlrpjjuqUP8GuxyB_rnoBDUyqc5j6Rt0n4_Gz2h0U0w4mbEtzz4duFIlAW3UdgzMMQZi4rO4hfig5oK7c3yUGG6iGghX2PQqPM1s7Nfdm9zg8CwtVGboq3MxgsEw/s640/IMG_6090.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The next task was to make a name tent and ask me a question or make a comment inside to turn in at the end of the period. I took them home and wrote a comment on every single one that had written to me. I got my idea from Sara VanDerWerf <a href="https://saravanderwerf.com/2016/08/07/week-1-day-1-name-tents-with-feedback/" target="_blank">here</a>. I made mine have only 3 days. I also printed dotted lines on the back so students could fold it a little easier.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0hxHH3rzbk39FM3rLp83USP5NHC-dTSUGMD0b4QPI4iFrNLQpMJPuFGYDYSd_OvwVOPV6di2FO8yQsui9t6ZF2e-6fkKbEZwHmrLy8HG7Ea8EONbuhVlXLJdgytIKMVKOne5pYDNa578/s1600/Name+Tent.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="488" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0hxHH3rzbk39FM3rLp83USP5NHC-dTSUGMD0b4QPI4iFrNLQpMJPuFGYDYSd_OvwVOPV6di2FO8yQsui9t6ZF2e-6fkKbEZwHmrLy8HG7Ea8EONbuhVlXLJdgytIKMVKOne5pYDNa578/s640/Name+Tent.png" width="640" /></a><img border="0" height="489" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-sNv-jn0RvqJflZNLdkVGUVyjWcS6AA9na0KHK02TlxIs2x7ilLG4eqfZPbIK2ZPoEu0SgLBIrQmhJ0-dEH0L2N90-be1juYdocEBbiiEQn1Bm3S6Cakfr2rwX0E3KhiQlKyW-QmFBbk/s640/Back.png" width="640" /></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After that, I had my students take the syllabus and a pencil and do a gallery walk around my room to read my posters. They had to write down things they read that were important. After they were seated, I asked each group to tell me something they read that was important. This is a great way to go over the rules without droning on and on about things they aren't allowed to do. Many of them noticed all my inspirational posters. I really think this set the positive tone for my classroom. </div>
<br />
I was disappointed that I had to postpone the cup stacking activity. I'll blog about it when we do get to it. Last was the MATH IS... math tweet. I have used this for a few years now (even though I wasn't on twitter myself!). I got the idea from <a href="http://mathequalslove.blogspot.com/2013/05/math-is.html" target="_blank">Math Equals Love</a> (Sarah Carter). I have to admit that I haven't read any of them yet!<br />
<br />
Thurday's post-it note activity was to write ONE FACT they wanted me to know about them.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I had planned to go over Google Classroom with them and have them complete a SMART goal and WHO I AM (both on Google Slides). Of course, first period I found out that I didn't have the correct naming convention for their new emails and the Google Chromebooks wouldn't let them sign in. Anticipating typical tech issues, I had those two documents printed out, thankfully! Boring, but doable!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Friday's post-it was to complete the sentence IF I KNEW I WOULDN'T FAIL, I WOULD...</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFfkl10LmcsJczDlmy3rRv0bXWg7AkAcl3ULzFxg74o3fyWGgcq9hRfH8qgNX4UIhGXx8Dr3AyCEdb7DAJHBBF7C-TmOG6Vr9SFg2QUE7TGSrjFlhNTpTYgsvCQhAkFRJR19fhr5WzxAI/s1600/IMG_6092.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFfkl10LmcsJczDlmy3rRv0bXWg7AkAcl3ULzFxg74o3fyWGgcq9hRfH8qgNX4UIhGXx8Dr3AyCEdb7DAJHBBF7C-TmOG6Vr9SFg2QUE7TGSrjFlhNTpTYgsvCQhAkFRJR19fhr5WzxAI/s640/IMG_6092.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
Regrettably, we didn't get to do the Formed Paper exercise, but I did get the right emails and they ALL WORKED!!!!! That's a first!! I went over Google Classroom and walked them through two assignments. They completed a WODB individually in Google Slides and turned it in (see examples below). The other activity was playing around with Geogebra, taking a screenshot and importing it into a Google Doc to turn in (see examples below). They were then given a homework assignment. It is a Google Form with a YouTube video embedded at the top. They will watch the video, answer the questions and submit the assignment. I set the Form up as a "Quiz" so it will be graded as soon as they turn it in. Honestly, there is no reason for them to miss any questions because they can simply rewatch the video to answer them. This is slight flip of my classroom. Video notes are going to be given as homework, so students can watch as many times as they need to and have success on homework.<br />
<br />
I've grade 4 out of 6 classes on the WODB assignment. It is SO EASY to check it, assign points, write private comments if I want and return the work to them. Plus, I don't have to lug two tons of paperwork home to grade. There's some serious procrastination going on when that huge stack is on the table staring at me!!!!!!<br />

15. I think this is actually a common teacher trait: I am a school supply freak!! I love colored pens and markers the best!<br />
<br />
16. I have influenced a younger cousin (like a lil sister to me) and both my girls to also be school supply freaks!! My girls still order their colored pencils or markers in rainbow order before they write anything or color with them. EVERY time we buy new pens, we write our first name in every color on the back of the package. It's kind of an unspoken rule!<br />

Let me back up and explain how this came about.<br />
<br />
At the end of the school year I had a discussion with my Principal about wanting to use Google Classroom in my class this year. I was excited to do more research over the summer. He mentions having a PD on it at some point. Fast forward to July 24th when I was looking over our back to school pre-planning schedule. I texted our Math Coach to see if he could move the math PD because two of us math teachers wanted to ATTEND the Google Classroom PD at the same time. It was about 15 minutes later that he informed me that I was going to be CO-TEACHING the GClassroom PD!<br />
<br />
So I set about planning to meet the other teacher to plan. I had created a class called Staff Development. He made an agenda (google doc) and an announcement while I created a google form and google sheet. <br />
<br />
I discussed with admin that if GClassroom wasn't going to be mandatory, then we needed to offer it to only those interested. The entire staff was told to attend. As with any technology, two things happened: they had difficulty signing onto the Chromebooks and many teachers were immediately overwhelmed! I did learn a couple things though: Chromebooks won't let you sign in if the date is wrong (I still don't know why or how the date was wrong!) and if you want teachers to be students in a class, they must first be a teacher of at least one class (which caused us to have to email our IT people).<br />
<br />
I was extremely frustrated as this was my first opportunity to conduct a training at my current school and I felt it was a total flop! After the overview, we allowed those teachers that were not interested in more information to go work in their rooms. We were left with about 8 of the interested teachers. I told a few of my close teacher/friends, including the new math coach, that I thought it was a complete failure. They all reassured me that it was an awesome training, and that they always expect the technology issues that I had no control over.<br />
<br />
The math coach said his wife enjoyed it and learned a lot. He said I was being hard on myself. We discussed setting up other opportunities for me to train teachers possibly on their planning periods, but only for those that are interested. I'm looking forward to doing these smaller trainings.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12261534130277143667noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2006366100127157487.post-26702620930794385822016-07-22T15:09:00.000-04:002016-07-22T15:11:00.109-04:00Decorating My Classroom (Part 2.5)After I cut out the Word Wall title and unit numbers this morning, I headed back to school. I still need to finish spray painting my mismatched file cabinets, but I'm contemplating relocating them in the storage room. It would either look cleaner or more bare. I won't be able to move my computer any further back because the cord coming from the board is tight now. Maybe when I neaten up the cords, I can find some slack.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Well, I went back to my classroom today. This time the A/C was on and it felt good!! The only bad thing is they were testing the bells and I realized I only have one more week at home before I go back to work on August 2nd! Ugh!<br />
<br />
I stopped by the Dollar Tree beforehand, picking up 2 magazine holders (small, only a little over 8.5"), some party birthday cups (in red, yellow and green) and a new bulletin board border.<br />
<br />
These were too cute to resist with their mathy decor. You can see in the second picture that I put a yard stick next to it so you could see the width.<br />

<br />
I have resisted the use of red, yellow and green cups in groups for years. My Mom used them over 10 years ago in the computer lab at an elementary school. I plan on using them when students are in groups, each group getting one of each color. Green means they are doing fine, yellow means they may need help soon and red means they are stuck. I want my students to learn to communicate and work together, so they must come to a consensus about what they want to ask before they put the red cup on top. When I get to the group, I will answer questions from one person. This means that they will have needed to discuss it prior to me coming over.<br />

I used this new border to cover up some of the (ugly) burgundy around this window. I don't like that the calendar isn't centered. Right now its held up with strong magnet clips, but I'm going to try to get command hooks to stick to it.<br />

<br /></div>
The day before, I created many posters, some inspirational (in blue, teal and lime green) and some necessary rules (in yellow, oranges, red and hot pink on another wall). Some of those posters were found from different sources on the internet. The 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th posters are from <a href="http://www.lightbulbsandlaughter.com/2014/09/classroom-posters-for-every-teacher.html" target="_blank">Light Bulbs and Laughter</a> and is a free download. The "Strengthen a Dendrite" poster was downloaded free from <a href="https://app.box.com/s/7aiygr2bewtgyq2g2mxe5ycme18yf4ha" target="_blank">here</a> (as soon as I find the tweet/blog I found the link in, I will give credit...SORRY!). At the end I will give links to the posters I created for free download.<br />

I love this set of posters about respect and the main color is lime green! I downloaded it for free from <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Digital-Divide-And-Conquer" target="_blank">Digital Divide and Conquer</a>. I printed them two-to-a-page so they are half the size they were designed to be. I wanted them to line up with the side of my assignment board.</div>

I have an unhealthy love of pocket charts! This one is huge and will hold the vocabulary for multiple units. Each unit is a different color, so there are 5 units shown here. The remaining units of vocabulary words are in the container sitting on the end of the table.<br />

I've now designed the WORD WALL title and unit numbers and will cut them out with my Silhouette Cameo (a machine that no teacher should be without!!). You can see the measurements on both the title and the group of unit numbers. (More pics later...)<br />

<br />
The Mathematical Practices are on the posters below the board. My new last name is on teal chevron party plates above the board and at the top is a sign I made last year. It says, "Make Yourself Proud". I think it fits in well with my Growth Mindset approach and inspirational posters.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNQUY4ZPbudzSLqY7vfGc0ZWe3VMCKcnUtaqJjhJyAUFH6zuSkRJ7b7pM2CQSC1ZX2PXJOj9csdl2CQVmCcxTblCrzZZUshQzs4F0vb-rdZaW5ge0LUEeIQJ_wbMvc6IVFCDmmEqDApZ8/s1600/IMG_5941.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNQUY4ZPbudzSLqY7vfGc0ZWe3VMCKcnUtaqJjhJyAUFH6zuSkRJ7b7pM2CQSC1ZX2PXJOj9csdl2CQVmCcxTblCrzZZUshQzs4F0vb-rdZaW5ge0LUEeIQJ_wbMvc6IVFCDmmEqDApZ8/s640/IMG_5941.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
And of course, we have to have rules and expectations. Here are posters of the policies: for tardies, for cell phones, for food/drink, for restroom passes and for backpacks and purses.<br />
<br />
Still on my list of things to do:<br />
<ul>
<li>Put teacher computer on the podium (large one I built several years ago)</li>
<li>Spray paint file cabinets (not inside, even though Magic Erasers help get overspray off the freshly waxed floors)</li>
<li>Put up Word Wall title and unit numbers</li>
<li>Finish the assignment board, including titles: M, T, W, T, F, Agenda, I Can, EQ, Power Hour Schedule, etc.</li>
<li>Draw out the brain (using the projector) and finish Growth Mindset bulletin board</li>
<li>Hang my ROBERTS pegboards (4 of the 7 fell using Command velcro, UGH!)</li>
<li>And any other crazy idea I can come up with!</li>
</ul>

I didn't think about it being on the weekend and the A/C not being on!! I had so much to do, so the heat didn't scare me away. I had a list of things I wanted to accomplish in Google Keep and didn't even consult that list until I thought I was done. Of the 15 things on my list, I completed 11 plus other things I noticed once I got in there.<br />
<br />
For a few years now, my colors have been turquoise, teal and lime green. Every year I buy new variations of those colors and freshen up the decor. I found a new pattern of duct tape at Walmart the other day. It's black geometric designs with turquoise and lime green! After I added this new light turquoise fabric to a table, I used the duct tape to add pizzazz to the top of the fabric on this table and the lime green one.<br />

Around Christmastime, I bought a whole bunch of pegboards from Target. I gave my daughters enough to cross-stitch their kids' names and I had enough left over to stitch my new married name. I chose to sew with 1/8" ribbon in the space around each letter. I also didn't center the letters to add variety. I used Command picture hanging strip to stick them to the wall. <br />

This is a 'sketch' of my assignment board. I wanted to switch up the layout of it this year. In the past, I've used Washi tape to create the separations between the sections. Last year I had bought lime chevron magnetic strips that I thought were cool. I used those to lay out my design. In doing that, I realized I didn't have enough, so as soon as I got home I looked them up online and ordered 2 pks of turquoise and 2 pks of magenta. I got them <a href="http://www.teachercreated.com/" target="_blank">here</a>. Once I have the three colors, I can finalize my design. The reason I love the magnetic strips so much is that I can rearrange my board EVERYDAY if I wanted to!! So much better than taping (that's never straight!) and having to buy more when I want to redo it!<br />

Because my teacher-neighbor won't be returning next year, I raided his classroom to get tables that matched mine. I took my mismatched ones over to his old room! I'm a little bit OCD and last year the tables drove me crazy!! Now I have 14 2-person tables, which I set up into 7 4-person groups. There is so much room to walk around the tables so I shouldn't be tripping on backpacks all year!</div>

Behind my GATOR flag was a huge mess of blue internet cables. This was one of the things <i>not</i> on my list but needed to be cleaned up. It took about 10 minutes to get them either pushed into the ceiling or tucked into the grey sleeves. It was such an improvement. I moved my flag into this spot to kinda hide the grey sleeves. Now I have a huge blank space on that wall. I look forward to creating something to fill it!<br />

This is one of my MANY pocket charts. This year I am pulling it back out for a Word Wall. I have hundreds (no kidding) of sentence strips from Dollar Tree that I will be writing all the vocabulary words on, to place in the clear pockets. This was another thing <i>not</i> on my list.<br />

I haven't decided what I want to put on this bulletin board. Last year, I titled it DATA CENTER and put grades (by lunch number) or my list of clicker numbers on there as needed. Sometimes it contained a new seating chart when I got tired of the current one. The table held all the handouts for that day, so students would picked them up as they walked in. It saved time and disruptions by not having to pass papers out.<br />

This board is actually a whiteboard whose surface has seen better days. I can't even use it without having to spray cleaner on it to get marker off. I hot glued black bulletin board paper over it to create a Growth Mindset bulletin board I purchased from Teachers Pay Teachers (<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Growth-Mindset-Poster-Bulletin-Board-2634077" target="_blank">link</a>).<br />

In the individual activity, each student received a copy of the sorting template and the 7 different types of triangles. The sorting template was a half sheet that would be glued into their interactive notebooks. They had to write in the two categories in which they would sort the 7 words and glue those onto the sorting template. I would check their work before gluing it down, but some students glued first.<br />
<br />
The pair activity was more successful with my students. I only had to print and cut out 15-20 sets. If they were laminated, they would last longer. If not, students frequently wrote what they thought to be the correct answer on them. Being a class set, this required me to reprint and recut to replace messed up sets or ones with lost pieces. <br />
<br />
As I began planning for the upcoming school year, I found Google Classroom and digital interactive notebooks. I knew this was for me because I love introducing my students to new useful technologies and it would save large amounts of money used in buying the paper, glue, tape, etc.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Students would work in pairs and decide which two categories into which these 7 words can be separated. Each student would be responsible for completing their own activity even though they are working together. Students will drag and drop each of the 7 words into the correct category. Once that is done as a pair, students are to write their own reflection, explaining their reasoning.</div>

Last year I designed a half-page document that students filled out and taped into their spiral interactive notebook. Each 9 weeks, they would cut the tape and remove the goal. They would fill in their reflection at the bottom and receive another one for the current nine weeks. That file can be found <a href="https://app.box.com/s/m33h57klr21elr8g2r29nmmri6xfvn8m" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />

<br />
This year, I will be using Google Classroom to assign tasks for my students. This allows me to create digital interactive documents in my Google Drive for my students. <span style="font-family: "hellokelly"; font-size: 14pt;">With the digital interactive version, my students
won’t need glue or tape and they will always have their “notebooks” with them
as long as they have access to technology and wi-fi!</span><span style="font-family: "hellokelly"; font-size: 14pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: "hellokelly"; font-size: 14pt;">No more wasted money on excessive supplies or wasted time
waiting for students to cut and paste.</span><span style="font-family: "hellokelly"; font-size: 14pt;">
</span><span style="font-family: "hellokelly"; font-size: 14pt;">Another advantage is that students can update their goal during the grading period.</span><span style="font-family: "hellokelly"; font-size: 14pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: "hellokelly"; font-size: 14pt;">In the paper
version, it would be permanently written and glued down.</span><br />

This summer I am taking many of my old "paper" versions and converting them into "digital" versions. <br />
<br />
You can find this activity here for <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Google-Digital-Interactive-Basic-Geometry-Figures-Activity-2620099" target="_blank">free</a>. Please let me know what you think and keep checking my blog and my TpT store for more!<br />

I get most of my inspiration from Pinterest and several blogs I read. I happened to come across a TpT file by Jennifer Kimbrell @TechwithJen. (You can buy that file <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Interactive-Notebooks-Professional-Development-Series-for-Google-1965035" target="_blank">here</a>.) She explains in the video in her file how to create interactive notebook files to be used in Google Slides. I was hooked!! I started searching for more files, only to find that there aren't many Geometry files out there, yet! I came across and purchased another file on TpT by Danielle Knight @StudyAllKnight. (That file can be purchased <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/GOOGLE-Drive-Toolkit-2203339" target="_blank">here</a>.) <br />
<br />
I, then, set about to convert some of my interactive (paper) notebook files into digital interactive files!<br />
So far I have converted my Classifying Triangles and Triangle Congruences Sorting Activities. I've also created 10 bellwork templates each with a different background for variety. The file I'm the proudest of is the 13 units of interactive vocabulary. In the downloadable preview, I give the list of vocab words by unit. Every single vocab term has a text box where students can type the definition and some other interactivity, including circling items in a diagram, moving arrows to point to parts of a diagram, drag and drops and fill-in-the-blanks. <br />
<br />

<b>Advantages of the Google Digital Version</b></h3>
<br />
<ul>
<li>saves money for teachers and parents because there's no need for a spiral notebook, tape, glue, lots of colored paper or scissors.</li>
<li>saves time during class that students waste cutting and gluing.</li>
<li>there will not be any lost pieces all over the floor.</li>
<li>are more colorful.</li>
<li>uses technology.</li>
<li>students have access anywhere they have internet, even on their phones.</li>
<li>students won't lose the files because they are kept on their Google Drive rather than at the bottom of a backpack.</li>
<li>students can do and redo these activities because they aren't glued down after the first attempt, making it a learning activity AND a review activity.</li>
<li>easier for students to read their work because it doesn't involve their handwriting.</li>
<li>they are more fun!</li>
</ul>

I knew yesterday by 2nd period that they wouldn't do well if I forced them to take the quiz at the beginning of class today. So a plan was hatched and a trip to Dollar Tree was planned. <br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The plan was to tape the floor with two parallel lines cut by a transversal. The more I thought about it, the more pieces I created. The trip to Dollar Tree only yielded a roll of pretty duct tape and a roll of navy blue masking tape. I went there to look for more traffic cones, but they were all gone. I had bought 8 traffic cones from there about 4 years ago and have never used them! Finally, they had a use!! I had 2 red, 2 orange, 2 yellow, 1 blue and 1 purple and I needed them in pairs. So I could only use the red, orange and yellow ones and it worked just fine.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here's a pic of my floor taped. Those are electrical plugs in my floor!</div>

Six signs with angle pair names, 3 pairs of colored cones, a timer to keep us on track, post-its for solving (one pair for congruent angles, one for supplementary) and student names on strips to pull at random (color-coded by class). <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The students grabbed a whiteboard, marker and a chair and sat in a semicircle around the taped lines. I explained how it worked and we got started. I would show everyone a sign with an angle pair and place it on the floor. Then, 2 random students were chosen and given cones. They would place the cones in the correct angles. If they had trouble on the first round, they could get help. Once the cones were placed, they were asked if those angle were congruent or supplementary. At that point, I would stick the post-its and have them use the whiteboards to solve for the variable. In some classes, we got thru the first round without anyone needing help so I would give two cones to a student and have them challenge another student. They would place their cone then challenge a student to find an angle that was, say corresponding to it.</div>

I had one student that is hard to reach tell me that it was fun and thanked me for doing the activity!!!! I had so much fun and it was such a productive activity (grades on quizzes after activity were better than expected!) that I invited my math coach and fellow geometry teachers to watch during their planning period. They plan on using it next week for their students as well!!</div>

-journal writing once or twice a week (answer essential questions in section of interactive notebook and write weekly reflections on a form on my website)</div>
<div>
-adding bell work and journal sections to the interactive notebook, joining activities and vocabulary sections already implemented.<br />
-planning with two other Geometry teachers at my school (admin has carved out time for us to meet every other week, all week if we choose!)<br />
-taking a leadership role at my school<br />

I have heard so much about the glue sponges and thought I would try them this year for our interactive notebooks. So far I love them and they only cost about $10 for all 12. The containers are 2 for $1 at Dollar Tree, the sponges were also 2 for $1 at Dollar Tree and glue was free (inherited from previous teacher in my room) but I figured $1 for 2 bottles, which was all I needed.<br />

I blog basically to have a repository of my thoughts, activities and pictures. There is no greater thrill than being on Pinterest and finding that someone loves you idea and has even added suggestions. I don't think I am followed by many, but I would like to change that. I have to say that Sarah Hagan at <a href="http://mathequalslove.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Math=Love</a> commented on my classroom photos and made my day!!!!<br />
<div>
There are over 100 blogs in my freely that I follow. I often get ideas from them but don't have the connection to be able to bounce ideas off of. <span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">In my past teaching experiences, I have been isolated often being the only teaching in the district to teach a subject. This year I will be co-planning with 2 teachers that will also be teaching geometry. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">My hope for Blaugust is that I can reach out and make those new connections with teachers. I want to become part of a larger group and be able to share ideas to collectively help our students. </span></div>

Other than moving to a larger room, this year is not too different from any other year. I continue to use a color scheme of turquoise, teal and lime green. This first photo is of the bulletin board to the left as students walks in my room. The title is "Data Center" and will contain their grades (using their ID number) by period and changed at the end of each week. It also contains a reminder to continue reaching their goals that we will set and revise each 9 weeks. Above the BB are 3 chalkboard butterflies with remnants of 3 vinyl tablecloths behind them for added color. You'll see the tablecloths further down.</div>

This is a piece of turquoise fabric hot-glued to the wall to create another BB. This will contain tweets by each of my students, color-coded, of course, by period. The # is styrofoam that came packed with our airboat radiator. I have another one that's thicker to use later. This one I covered with lime scrapbook paper on the front only. <a href="https://app.box.com/s/r70kjt52hkjv3aote5y8mbfbighw1015" target="_blank">Here</a> is the worksheet I use.</div>

I used 8 rolls of fine mesh in 4 different colors to cover the ugly burgundy doors leading in to the storage room and office. The other one is further down this wall. I hot-glued black fabric to the back side of the window, which actually creates an illusion of a two-way mirror. Since my command hooks won't stick to the window, my Mom used 3 heavy duty magnets to stick my calendar pocket chart to the window frame.</div>

Here's the other door I mentioned earlier. I created those dodecahedron balls with my Silhouette Cameo also. They are probably my favorite of all my decorations!! The GROUPS Expectations poster is actually another piece of turquoise fabric with a green masking tape (from Hobby Lobby) border. <br />

It's kinda hard to read, but the plates spell out my name. Again I used my Silhouette for those letters and the ones for MAKE YOURSELF PROUD.<br />

Here is my podium I made years ago, painted to match my decor. It had some double sided stickies stuck to it so I covered those with 3D flowers and my name again (Silhouette). My Mom weaved a spring rod through the fabric shower curtain to cover yet another burgundy door. In the background, you can see the other #.<br />

Finally, here are the three vinyl tablecloths. They were 54"x108". I cut off 10" from each (see butterflies). These are folded in half and hot-glued to the plastic valance, making them come down 27" from the ceiling. They don't block the light but they do add so much color!</div>

Once I get all the stuff organized, I'll add photos. The counter is starting to look like it will for the students. It will contain all the supplies they need each day as well as being the spot where they turn in their work (2 sets of pink trays, also IKEA $8.99 each set).</div>

A couple of weeks ago, I was looking for interesting ways to gather feedback from my students. I wanted to get a feel of how my two Geometry Honors classes felt the second half of the year went. At the semester break, their former teacher left for a family illness and my schedule was revamped to take these two classes. I fell in love with these students immediately. They were hard-working, curious individuals that, I have found recently, love a challenge.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So my choice of search for all things awesome sent me to Pinterest! It was there that I found the colorful dodecahedrons created by 12 inscribed pentagons and numerous staples! So as the pin was on my screen, I opened Geometer's Sketchpad and created this <a href="https://app.box.com/s/gsw0xk9270vc16xuv0prujb9gb90tuko">template</a>. (I later created a <a href="https://app.box.com/s/f3iseq3fr6rz7m85bftbc70w72e9alkl">larger version</a> for next year.)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I was only planning to have my Geometry Honors classes participate, but I woke up with the beginnings of a migraine and decided my Algebra 2 classes could do the same thing. I went into school before the kids arrived and made copies on colored paper. While I was setting my room up for my sub, she walked in. I briefly explained that each student needed to fill out 2 pentagons, cut the circles out and fold on the dotted lines (pentagon). For each shape, they were to write about a lesson they learned this year and/or an activity that they enjoyed.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdzGis7o-5hQIIrlpdtroho19fjrc2GpUR5UI856K6ppJ5W05G15i1AvT9Yncdv3z58-ooP-Ucs_vUYzVJQDH6ktu71GiQh0g_lc696k_UZifoB4ztNWJMlRRXU5n6XugTK80K5w1bgus/s1600/IMG_2193.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdzGis7o-5hQIIrlpdtroho19fjrc2GpUR5UI856K6ppJ5W05G15i1AvT9Yncdv3z58-ooP-Ucs_vUYzVJQDH6ktu71GiQh0g_lc696k_UZifoB4ztNWJMlRRXU5n6XugTK80K5w1bgus/s320/IMG_2193.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
When I came back in the next day, my awesome sub had found my Ziploc baggies, filled each one with a class of pentagons and labelled them!! For the next two periods, while my students worked on their surface area/volume project, I walked around with a few pentagons and a stapler in my hand, putting together a total of 14 dodecahedrons. (It took over a day to staple them all.) As I was walking around, my kids asked questions about the shape that I was creating. So, I showed them a finished one and asked them to guess how many pentagons made the solid. They were really into guessing and many got it right the first time. I then asked what it was called. After a couple seconds they were able to tell me dodecahedron (some said dodecagon first and I just waited).</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The next day during my planning period, which fortunately is attached to my lunchtime (!!!), I hung them from the ceiling with fishing line. I thought 14 would be too many, but once I got them all up, I wished I had more. That's why I created a larger version of the inscribed pentagons so it would fill up more space, plus the students would be expected to write more details.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I have passed this project idea along to a couple of colleagues and look forward to sharing with other teachers during post-planning this year, or pre-planning next year. While this is not my original idea, it is an original template.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I need to pull one of them down and count the number of staples. That will be a question I ask my students. I love to listen to them explain their thinking!</div>

Matrices were not tested on their EOC, so it was saved till now.<br />
<br />
In anticipation for starting matrices tomorrow, I began last year revamping my old lessons. I pulled out examination textbooks I have collected over the years to find multiple step word problems and hit the internet for areas that use matrices. The first document was 4-part notes. After each part, a discussion would be held and a formative assessment sheet would be given. Here is the lesson plan I shared with a friend that also teaches Algebra 2 at my school:<br />
<br />
Lesson Plan for Matrices Unit<br />
Matrices Inquiry worksheet are the “notes”.<br />
Day 1: Part 1 Matrices Inquiry, CW/HW Data in Matrices Sheet<br />
Day 2: Part 2 Matrices Inquiry, CW/HW Matrix Add, Subtract & Scalar Mult. Sheet<br />
HW: watch video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kuixY2bCc_0)<br />
<div>

So the rest of this week, I have been giving them miscellaneous mini challenges, nothing too deep. One day they had to find a buried treasure using geometric constructions. Today, I gave them the Four Fours Worksheet. All students were engaged with this worksheet, even those that mentally drift off. They were getting frustrated ("I'm gonna break this calculator!", "This is harder than the EOC!"), but they would not let it beat them. The office called to tell me one of my girls was checking out. She is typically chatty and not-so-engaged. She told me, "I only have 2 more to find and I'm not leaving till I get them!". She checked out 5 minutes later, AFTER she found the last two! Needless to say, it was a good day! Here's the link to my version of the <a href="https://app.box.com/s/m3n0xyqwmz3hhlxkw0x8wwzpi6x6iye8">Four Fours Wkst</a>.<br />

All of them have been for the best, even though lots of stress was involved!<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li><b>March</b> - bought a new car and gave my paid-off car to my daughter.</li>
<li><b>April</b> - my divorce was final, hence the blog name change.</li>
<li><b>May</b> - was told my teaching contract wouldn't be renewed for the following year (gotta love a superintendent that's kin to everyone!) I had been at that school for 6 years and the district had decided not to offer tenure to new teachers at 3 years of service. BTW, I was voted Teacher of the Year during my third year! I see where that got me!! Of course, it was during the previous superintendent's reign.</li>
<li><b>June</b> - my "baby girl" graduated from high school, moved to a town 15 minutes away, into a condo I own and I moved out of a rented home and out of my classroom in less than a month's time (It's amazing how much "stuff" we collect over years of teaching!). I started my Masters degree online through University of Florida and began job hunting.</li>
<li><b>July</b> - I was offered my current job in the same town that my daughter moved to, where my parents live and I grew up. I actually graduated from the high school I work at now.</li>
<li><b>August</b> - school started and I began teaching Algebra 2, which I have not taught in 5 years. My teaching philosophy and style has changed tremendously, so it was like I had to start fresh. Even though I LOVE my new school, it has been extremely stressful. In the fall, I battled tension headaches that would frequently turn into a migraine, sometimes 6 days a week. Now that they are under control and I have adapted to the extra work time involved in my Masters, I want to start blogging again. </li>
</ul>
<div>
I hope to find out soon what I will be teaching next year. I think there will be an overload of Geometry students due to the revamping of the high school math sequencing (Alg 1, Alg 2, Geom). I hope to have all Geometry classes. In preparation for planning for next year, this weekend, hours were dedicated to reorganizing my computer files. I deleted so many files that I gained 7 GBs of space! There were so many files in my downloads, many of which I had forgotten about, that it was like Christmas going through them!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In future posts, I will share many ideas I have learned during my past 6 Masters classes. Hopefully, this will help cement the learning with me and help me to prepare for next year. Lots of ideas are flying through my mind, so it may take a little while to start organizing them.</div>

LOL), that it wasn't for a grade (I give them 2-3 days notice that I am grading it and take it as a quiz grade. This is from the student that admitted to only having done 25%, doesn't have a most or least favorite activity, but Q#4 was a 4 and Q#5 was a 3.). And my favorite comment: Nothing. You're doing a good job. It helps me practice and keep well-organized notes. SUCCESS!!! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I guess in every survey, you have a couple that Christmas tree it or leave blanks, but overall they have great feedback. Glow in the dark words would be a super addition, but probably not real practical! Next year, I will continue to use 3-subject spirals, but will suggest the ones with plastic covers. (I recommend that they keep it in their 3-ring binder, but many choose not to, causing it to get rather beat up.) I don't want them to be able to add paper because it takes away from their ongoing organization, but they also need to learn not to pull paper out of it. Grading will still take place as is. Sometimes assigning a grade keeps kids working, because they know the assignment has value. Some of mine will do it because I assign it, but those are a small portion.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12261534130277143667noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2006366100127157487.post-67155702735213030902014-01-15T20:13:00.000-05:002014-07-09T10:36:03.682-04:00Equilateral and Isosceles TrianglesLet me start by saying that I will be changing this lesson before I use it again! I thought I could teach it off the cuff as I have in years past, but I found that I was teaching it differently and better the second time I taught it.** My INB shows what I taught my first Geometry class of the day. As I have written 5 blog posts today, I have learned that simply by typing an explanation helps me see things I would like to change, whether it's the name of the activity, directions, overall design, etc.<br /><br />The good:<br />-each triangle is folded in half (altitude, twin triangles)<br />-the terms equilateral and equiangular are broken down (equi means equal, etc.)<br />-each triangle is glued only on the left side<br />-formula for side of the 30-60-90 triangle in the equilateral one.<br />-I questioned the 2nd class about the meaning of altitude and they said height, so I used the example of altitude of a plane being measured straight down (90 degree angle to ground).<br />-discussed angle bisectors and segment bisectors<br /><br />The bad:<br />-triangles were too small<br />-should've use <i>a</i>, 2<i>a</i> and <i>a</i> radical 3, instead of <i>a</i> over 2, <i>a</i> and <i>a</i> radical 3 over 2<br />-I didn't explain altitude as well during 1st class<br />-didn't even use the word symmetry<br /><br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjluVJiQVmASCRhWp2yrUxlGRQ0Zajis9lW8T1DFGPJfNIdSTo8P6ZqgNFk3dsZuGTvcI9OEk9reOg77ZuY4MM2R3gETXDoH2hwoOzED04NcUx_O1cqPOD8FSbQzWkv57g9Yew6abMynuQ/s1600/20140115_131704.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjluVJiQVmASCRhWp2yrUxlGRQ0Zajis9lW8T1DFGPJfNIdSTo8P6ZqgNFk3dsZuGTvcI9OEk9reOg77ZuY4MM2R3gETXDoH2hwoOzED04NcUx_O1cqPOD8FSbQzWkv57g9Yew6abMynuQ/s1600/20140115_131704.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">**I believe that teaching is different for each class to some degree. My teaching is better when I get feedback from my students and that happens more often in the 2nd Geometry class of the day! </div><br />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12261534130277143667noreply@blogger.com0
